  2. 2Lock the device and protect the phone number
  3. 3Report it and rebuild essential access
Detailed steps

Follow these steps

1

Locate it without putting yourself at risk

Call it and check the official device-finding service. Contact the last venue or operator; do not follow a live location into a private or unsafe place.

2

Lock the device and protect the phone number

Mark it lost, add an alternate contact, then contact the mobile provider about suspending the SIM or eSIM. Protect wallet cards, email and other recovery accounts.

3

Report it and rebuild essential access

File a police lost-property report, keep the device identifiers and report details, then arrange temporary connectivity and account recovery. Remote erase is a last resort.

Useful Japanese phrase

I lost my smartphone. Has it been found?

スマートフォンをなくしました。届いていますか?

Sumātofon o nakushimashita. Todoite imasu ka?

If a location points to theft or an unsafe place, do not recover the phone yourself. Contact police. Call 110 for an immediate crime or danger; otherwise report the loss at a police box or station.

The first 10 minutes: search, secure, then report

  1. Call it and check the last place. Ask station, taxi, hotel or shop staff with the route, time and device description. Use another trusted device to open iCloud Find Devices for iPhone or Google Find Hub for Android. Finding and locking depend on settings and connectivity already available on the missing device.
  2. Mark it lost or secure it. Follow Apple’s Lost Mode or Google’s Mark as lost instructions. For an apparently misplaced phone, a safe alternate contact can help a finder return it. For suspected theft, Apple advises against displaying personal contact details that could be used for a scam. Do not give anyone a passcode, password or verification code in response to a “found phone” message.
  3. Call your mobile provider. Ask it to suspend the physical SIM or eSIM and protect the number from misuse; ask about transferring service to a replacement. Suspending data can also affect live tracking, so record the latest location and lock request first when safe to do so. Ask your bank and card issuers to suspend exposed cards or mobile payments as appropriate.
  4. File the report and secure accounts. Keep the device serial number or IMEI, case number and operator contact. Review your Apple or Google account, primary email, password manager, banking and recovery methods from a trusted device. Change credentials if access is at risk; use saved recovery codes rather than sending codes to the missing number.
  5. Restore travel essentials. Recover bookings, maps, tickets, hotel address and two-factor access. Ask your provider about a replacement SIM/eSIM; the offline and Wi-Fi guide and SIM/eSIM comparison offer temporary options.

If your passport was in the same bag, use the passport reporting and embassy steps in parallel. A phone report alone does not replace a passport report or travel document.

Should you erase it remotely?

Erase only after weighing data exposure against a realistic chance of recovery. Erasure cannot be undone and has device-specific consequences: Google says an erased Android device can no longer be located in Find Hub, while Apple says newer iPhones may still be locatable after erase. Check the current instructions for your model. Do not remove a stolen iPhone from Find My, which removes Activation Lock. If the phone was never set up for a finding service, prioritize carrier suspension and account protection.

Questions travelers ask

Can the hotel or station track the phone?

No. Give staff the place and time to search their own lost-property system; use your device provider’s official finding service for location. The general lost-item guide identifies the right railway, airport or taxi contact.

What about a transit card or wallet on the phone?

Check the issuer’s own lost-device and transfer instructions. A bank card, mobile transit card and carrier plan can each require a separate action; do not assume locking one automatically resolves all of them.

What if my only verification device was the lost phone?

Apple’s iCloud Find Devices can be used without a verification code to mark a device lost. For other accounts, try an already trusted device or stored backup codes, then use each provider’s official recovery process. Avoid unofficial “recovery agents.”
