Can I drive in Japan? International Driving Permit and translation rules

What to do right now
Do not book from the words “international permit” alone. Japan accepts only a qualifying 1949 Geneva Convention IDP or, for six designated countries and regions, the original license with an authorized paper Japanese translation.
Confirm whether your license-issuing country uses a qualifying 1949 Geneva Convention IDP or is one of the six translation-route countries or regions.

Check every original document and date
Carry your passport, valid original domestic license and the correct original IDP or authorized paper translation. A photo, PDF or private online permit is not a substitute.

Ask the rental operator to check the exact documents. A reservation or payment does not prove that you may legally drive in Japan.

A reservation is not permission to drive
A rental company can refuse the vehicle at pickup when the documents do not meet Japanese law—even if the booking was accepted and paid. Confirm the country or region that issued your license, not your nationality or current address.
A1949 GENEVA CONVENTION ROUTE
Original license + qualifying IDP + passport
The permit must follow the 1949 Geneva Convention format and be issued by an authorized organization in a contracting country. A 1968 Vienna Convention permit or a privately sold online “international license” is not valid in Japan.
BSIX-LICENSE TRANSLATION ROUTE
Original license + authorized paper translation + passport
This route applies only to licenses issued in Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco or Taiwan. Slovenia is not included. The translation must come from an issuer accepted under Japanese rules.
CNEITHER ROUTE FITS
Do not drive in Japan
A translation alone cannot make another country’s license valid, and an ordinary foreign license by itself is not enough. Use public transport, taxis or a hired driver unless an official authority confirms another lawful route.

DRIVING PERIODThe shorter period controls
In general, the driving period ends at the earlier of one year from your landing in Japan or the document’s own expiration. An IDP’s permitted period cannot exceed one year from its issue date.
RESIDENT RE-ENTRY CAUTIONA quick trip abroad may not reset the clock
For some people recorded in Japan’s Basic Resident Register, leaving and returning within three months may not create a new start date. Ask the prefectural Driver’s License Center before driving.

Prepare the approved paper document early
The six-country or region route requires the original foreign license, an authorized Japanese translation on paper and your passport. A screenshot, phone photo, home printout or translation of an IDP is not a replacement.
