Save the hotel or venue name, full address and phone number in Japanese. Set the pin where a vehicle can legally stop.

Metered fare, dispatch or reservation fees, tolls and late-night surcharges may apply. App payment and accepted cards vary by vehicle and service.

Match the licensed vehicle and keep the receipt

Confirm the app vehicle and plate before boarding. Avoid unsolicited airport or street offers, and keep the receipt or trip record in case you lose something.

Use a taxi rank, your hotel or an established app

Do not accept an unsolicited ride.

At airports and stations, use the marked taxi rank. A prebooked hire car should have a confirmed operator and pickup arrangement. Japan’s transport authorities warn travelers against unlicensed “shirotaku” rides and airport touts.

BEFORE YOU REQUEST THE CAR

Prepare four things

Exact destination
Save the place name, full street address, phone number and map pin. A famous chain may have several branches.

Legal pickup point
Choose a taxi rank or a place where the vehicle can safely stop. Large stations often have several exits and ranks.

Complete expected cost
Ask whether the ride uses a meter or fixed fare and whether dispatch, reservation, app, toll, airport or late-night charges apply.

Payment method
Cash is still the safest backup. Cards, QR payments and in-app payment depend on the vehicle and service; check before the ride.

FARES AND LATE-NIGHT RIDES

The meter is only one part of the total

Ordinary taxi fares are generally calculated by the meter. JNTO notes a late-night surcharge commonly applies between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.; tolls are paid by the passenger. Local tariff periods, booking fees and fixed-airport fares differ, so treat an app estimate as an estimate unless the app clearly confirms a fixed fare.

After the last train

A taxi may be the most practical option, but availability is not guaranteed during rain, holidays, major events or late-night peaks. Check the last train before leaving, save the hotel address offline and keep enough battery and payment backup to complete the ride.

WHEN THE CAR ARRIVES

Match the vehicle, then let the driver control the door

Match the app’s vehicle, company and plate information.
Use the rear passenger door; in many Japanese taxis the driver opens and closes it automatically.
Wear the seat belt and keep belongings together.
No tip is normally expected. Pay the displayed amount and ask for a receipt.
If an item is lost, use the receipt or app trip record to contact the taxi operator first.
