A barcode or reservation for one chain may not work at another. Confirm the address, opening hours and service mark before traveling there.

Prepare the required code or payment method

Keep the barcode, reference numbers, passport or card requested by the provider. Some kiosk, ticket and bill procedures have a short register deadline or require cash.

Keep every receipt

Save the payment, parcel, pickup or ticket receipt until the transaction is complete. It may contain the inquiry number, deadline or operator contact.

Do not assume every convenience store is open 24 hours or offers the same ATM, ticket, parcel, Wi-Fi or payment service. Check the exact chain, store and machine named in your reservation or provider message.

What can a Japanese convenience store do?

ATM

Withdraw Japanese yen

Look for your card-network logo on the ATM. The machine operator, accepted cards, limit, fee and maintenance time vary by location.

TICKET

Pay for or issue a reservation

Use only the chain and procedure shown by the booking provider. Bring the barcode or reference numbers and follow any register deadline.

PARCEL

Send an eligible parcel

Participating stores accept selected domestic parcel services. Size, destination and parcel type restrictions apply; refrigerated parcels normally require a staffed carrier counter or pickup.

PICKUP

Collect an arranged order

Select convenience-store pickup during the order or redelivery process first. A store cannot usually find a parcel that was not routed there.

Wi-Fi

Use Wi-Fi only where offered

Lawson publishes free Wi-Fi for equipped stores. FamilyMart’s former Famima_Wi-Fi ended in 2022; check its current d Wi-Fi information instead.

PAY

Pay for shopping and selected services

Ordinary purchases may accept several methods, but tickets, bills, online-payment slips and other counter services can have stricter rules or require cash.

New Year backup—not a promise

Many convenience stores remain useful when other businesses close, but tenant stores, rural locations and individual branches may shorten hours or close. ATM networks, ticket systems and parcel collection also have their own maintenance and holiday schedules.

Bring the information the machine or cashier needs

Confirm the exact branch
Check the chain, full address, opening hours and service icon. A booking for FamilyMart cannot automatically be completed at Lawson or 7-Eleven.

Save the code offline
Keep the barcode, QR code, reference numbers, payment deadline and pickup deadline available even if mobile data fails.

Bring a backup payment method
The counter may not accept the same method as an ordinary store purchase. Carry yen and a second card instead of relying on phone payment alone.

Keep the printed receipt
A kiosk slip may need to be taken to the register quickly. Keep the final receipt until the ticket, payment, parcel or pickup is fully completed.

Chain differences

Do not treat the three major chains as identical

7-Eleven

Seven Bank ATMs are widely useful for overseas cards. Check the ATM’s card logos and final fee screen; other store services still vary by branch and reservation provider.

FamilyMart

A store may have E-net, Famima or Japan Post Bank ATM service plus a multi-copy machine, tickets, payments and parcels. FamilyMart’s own Famima_Wi-Fi is no longer operating.

Lawson

Equipped stores may offer LAWSON Free Wi-Fi, Lawson Bank ATM and Loppi procedures. Lawson says free Wi-Fi is limited by session count and is not available at every store.

ATM

Read every screen before confirming

Check the amount, ATM fee, card-issuer fee and any yen-versus-home-currency choice. A displayed network logo does not guarantee that your issuer will approve the withdrawal.

Wi-Fi

Treat public Wi-Fi as public

Avoid banking, password changes and sensitive document uploads. Prefer mobile data or a trusted VPN, disable automatic joining and forget the network afterward.

PARCEL

Keep essentials out of shipped luggage

Do not send passports, cash, medicine, tickets or anything needed the same day. Confirm the delivery date and destination before handing over the parcel.

DEADLINE

A kiosk slip is not the finished ticket

Some procedures create an application slip that must be paid or exchanged at the cashier within a limited time. Follow the provider’s current screen and instructions.
