What to do right now
Tipping is normally unnecessary in Japan. Pay the stated total, separate service or table charges and local taxes from gratuities, and ask before offering money in a rare exception.
- 1Pay the stated total
- 2Check a rare exception first
- 3Hand it directly if accepted
Follow these steps
Pay the stated total
Restaurants, taxis and hotels normally do not expect an extra percentage. A service, table or local tax charge shown on the bill is not a tip request.
Check a rare exception first
A private guide or some high-end ryokan may accept a gratuity, but it is not automatic. Follow the provider’s stated policy.
Hand it directly if accepted
Use a small envelope, offer it discreetly and accept a refusal. Do not leave loose cash on a table or in a hotel room.
This is just a small token of my appreciation.
