Confirm the service date and direction

The 2026 regular service runs both ways between Magome and Tsumago from March 20 through November 30. Winter uses a different on-request service and price.

Reach the correct counter before 11:30

Use Magome Tourist Information Center, Magome-juku BASE or Tsumago Tourist Information Center as listed for your direction. Late arrival can leave you carrying the bag on the trail.

Collect the bag before the counter closes

The current 2026 notice lists collection from 13:00 to 17:00. Keep the receipt and do not pack anything you may need during the walk.

Send your bag before walking Magome–Tsumago

Do not start the trail with a suitcase and hope to solve it later.

The regular local transfer is a same-day counter-to-counter service, not ordinary hotel delivery. In 2026 it runs from March 20 through November 30. Drop off by 11:30, then collect at the other end between 13:00 and 17:00.

Some older English visitor pages still show ¥500. The dedicated 2026 Tsumago notice and current Nakatsugawa City guide list ¥1,000 per bag. Use the dated 2026 local notice and confirm again before travel.

Many travelers choose this direction because more of the route is downhill. It is still a real walk with slopes, uneven surfaces and weather exposure.

REVERSE DIRECTION

Tsumago → Magome

Use this direction only when the live transport connections, accommodation or your wider itinerary work better. Allow more effort for the uphill sections.

Different on-request service

The official 2026 notice lists ¥4,500 per trip for up to three bags, plus ¥1,000 for each additional bag. Contact the local office instead of assuming the regular daily run operates.

Carry your passport, wallet, medicine, electronics and everything needed before collection. Ask the counter about size, contents and other acceptance limits.

    The 2026 regular listing is ¥1,000 per bag, with collection from 13:00 to 17:00. Pay as instructed and keep the receipt.

    Ask whether the bag is acceptable

    Show unusual size, fragile contents or anything that may leak. Never assume every suitcase or item will be accepted.

    Remove essentials

    Carry identification, money, medicine, water, rain protection, phone power and the onward transport information.

Do not plan a through-transfer from Nakatsugawa Station without checking.

Nakatsugawa’s official hands-free page currently marks its station–Magome luggage service as suspended and says a bag sent on that route cannot simply be placed onto the Magome–Tsumago run. Treat each service as a separate product.

How much is the Magome–Tsumago luggage transfer in 2026?

The regular service is ¥1,000 per bag. Some older English pages still display ¥500, so use the dated 2026 local notice.

Is Nakasendo luggage transfer same day?

Yes, for the regular Magome–Tsumago counter service: drop off between 8:30 and 11:30 and collect at the other end from 13:00 to 17:00.

Does the regular service run in winter?

No. The regular 2026 period is March 20–November 30. The official notice lists a separate on-request service from December 1 to March 19 at a different price.

Can my bag go directly to a hotel?

Do not assume the regular counter service includes your hotel. Ask the accommodation or a separate hotel-to-hotel operator about the exact route, date, delivery time and reception conditions.

Can I send a bag from Nakatsugawa Station through to Tsumago?

Do not rely on that connection. The official Nakatsugawa page currently marks its station–Magome service as suspended and says bags on that service cannot be transferred onto the Magome–Tsumago run.
