Shinkansen oversized baggage rules: when you must reserve space

Measure your suitcase, reserve the correct seat when required and avoid the ¥1,000 unreserved baggage fee.

Quick answer

Add the length, width and height of each bag. If the total is more than 160 cm and no more than 250 cm, reserve an eligible seat with oversized baggage space before boarding.

Reserve the correct seat before boarding

For oversized baggage on the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen, select a seat with an oversized baggage area or eligible compartment. The baggage-space reservation itself has no additional charge.

Use only the space assigned to your reservation

After boarding, place the bag in the area or compartment connected to your reserved seat. If suitable space is sold out, choose another eligible train or send the luggage ahead.

Measure the outside of your suitcase before booking

Add length, width and height, including wheels, handles and protruding parts. A normal airline label such as “large” is not enough to decide the JR rule.

Where advance reservation applies

Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen

The oversized-baggage reservation rule applies on these Shinkansen services. It does not apply in the same way to conventional JR lines, but the ordinary carry-on size, quantity and weight limits still apply.

What changed on July 1, 2025?

On a trial basis, the “oversized baggage compartment” on some Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen decks became available as storage without advance reservation for baggage that does not require an oversized-baggage reservation. This did not remove the rule for bags over 160 cm: passengers with oversized baggage must still reserve an eligible seat and use the space connected to that reservation.

Reserve and store it in four steps

1Measure every large bagAdd the three outside dimensions. Measure each bag separately rather than adding several bags together.
2Choose an eligible reserved seatOnline or at a JR reserved-seat ticket machine or counter, select a “seat with an oversized baggage area” or an eligible “seat with an oversized baggage compartment.” Tell staff you have oversized baggage if booking at a counter.
3Match the space to the suitcaseThe area is behind designated last-row seats. Compartments are on a nearby deck and have their own dimension limits; an IC card may be needed for the lock. Choose the rear area if the bag will not fit the compartment.
4Use only the space assigned to youDo not place a large suitcase behind another passenger’s seat. Keep aisles and doors clear and follow train-crew instructions.

Boarding with oversized baggage but no reservation costs ¥1,000

The fee includes tax, and the crew will direct where the bag must be stored. Paying the fee is not a substitute for reserving in advance; if eligible space is sold out, choose another train or send the bag.

Three easily missed details

Strollers, instruments and sports equipment

These items are exempt from the oversized-baggage reservation rule, but you must reserve the designated seat if you want to use the oversized baggage area or compartment.

If you miss the reserved train

Do not simply take the bag into a non-reserved car on the next train. Ask staff and obtain another eligible reserved seat for the oversized baggage.

If the bag is hard to lift but not oversized

If it remains within JR's ordinary carry-on size and weight limits, the oversized-baggage reservation is not required. Ask staff for the safest option before boarding if you cannot lift or store it securely.
