Some compliant smoking rooms, heated-tobacco rooms, eligible older small establishments or smoking-focused businesses may permit smoking under specific conditions. Train, station, bus or airport

Vehicles and ordinary station or terminal areas are non-smoking. Use only a marked smoking room or area. A platform, restroom, boarding gate or bus stop is not permitted unless explicitly designated.

Can you smoke in a hotel room?

Private car or rental car

Follow the rental agreement and vehicle sign. A non-smoking vehicle must stay smoke-free; deodorizing or cleaning charges may be substantial. Never throw a lit butt from a vehicle.

Are smoking fines the same across Japan?

No. Street-smoking restrictions and penalties come from local ordinances. For example, Shibuya currently states a ¥2,000 administrative fine, but that amount must not be applied to every part of Tokyo or Japan. Hotel cleaning charges are private booking terms, not the same thing as a municipal fine.
