Do not keep tapping or push through the gate. Confirm whether the display says the balance is insufficient or shows a different card or journey error.

Recharge or pay the shortage

Use an eligible fare-adjustment machine near the exit. Physical IC cards commonly require Japanese cash; machine and mobile-card payment options vary by operator.

Finish with the same card

Tap the same physical or mobile IC card used at entry. If it still does not work, ask staff to inspect the balance and journey record before trying another card.

Do not force the gate or switch cards. If the display indicates insufficient balance, recharge or add the shortage at an eligible fare-adjustment machine inside the paid area, then tap the same IC card again.

What to do when your IC card balance is too low

    Let other passengers pass. Do not push the gate, follow another passenger or keep tapping while the gate shows an error.

    Read the message

    Look for a low-balance or insufficient-fare message. A red light or error can also mean the card was not read, two cards interfered or a previous journey record is incomplete.

    Find “Fare Adjustment” or “Recharge”

    Look near the inside of the exit gates for a machine showing のりこし精算機 or ask the staffed gate. Choose English if available.

    Add enough Japanese yen

    Follow the machine’s instructions. JR East confirms that Suica can be recharged or charged only for the shortage after entry at an eligible fare-adjustment machine. Physical-card machines commonly use cash.

    Tap the same card again

    Use the exact physical card, iPhone or other device used at entry. If it still fails, stop and show it to station staff.

Do not pay the same journey with a second IC card

The entry record is stored on the card or device you used. Tapping another card can create another error instead of closing the first journey. Ask staff before combining cash, a paper ticket or another payment method.

Use cash at a compatible machine

JR East states that physical Suica charging is cash-only at its regular, multifunction and eligible fare-adjustment machines. Other operators and machines can differ.

MOBILE CARD

Try the official wallet or ask staff

A mobile card may be charged through its supported wallet, but the payment card, device, service hours or connection can fail. Do not delete the card while troubleshooting at the gate.

NO SUITABLE MACHINE

Use the staffed gate

Show the same card or device and say where you entered. Staff can identify whether the issue is balance, the journey record, service-area limits or something else.

Can you enter with almost no balance?

Do not rely on it. JR East states that its automatic gate cannot be used when the stored balance is below the minimum IC fare at entry. Requirements can differ by operator, so check the balance before boarding.

What if my Suica balance is too low to exit?

Use an eligible fare-adjustment machine inside the paid area to recharge or add the shortage, then tap the same Suica again. Ask staff if the message is unclear.

Can I pay the shortage with cash?

Often through a compatible fare-adjustment machine or with staff, but the exact procedure depends on the operator and station. Keep Japanese cash available and follow the displayed instructions.

Can I use another Suica or PASMO to exit?

Do not do this without staff instructions. The original card contains the entry record, and a second card does not automatically complete that journey.

Why does the gate still reject my card after charging?

The problem may be an incomplete journey record, card-reading interference, a service-area boundary or a different ticket requirement. Stop retrying and ask station staff to inspect the same card.

Can I combine an IC card with a paper ticket?

Some combinations and fare-adjustment procedures are supported, but they vary. Show both the paper ticket and the IC card to staff before inserting or tapping anything.
