Confirm the model, purchase region, operating system and wallet requirements. Many Android phones sold outside Japan do not support Osaifu-Keitai.

Use the official setup route

On a compatible iPhone, add the transit card in Apple Wallet or use the official Welcome Suica Mobile service for visitors. On a compatible Android, follow Google Wallet’s e-money setup.

Keep a physical fallback

If the card cannot be added or charged, stop troubleshooting before the gate and use a physical IC card or paper ticket.

Your exact phone decides whether Mobile Suica works

A current iPhone can often add a Japanese transit card. Android needs specific Japanese e-money hardware support; seeing NFC or Google Wallet on the phone is not enough.

Can this phone use Mobile Suica?

iPhone 8 or laterUsually the simplest route

Apple’s current requirements list iPhone 8 or later with supported iOS, an Apple Account with two-factor authentication and an eligible payment card in Wallet. The Japan-purchase restriction is stated only for the older iPhone 7 and 7 Plus exception.

AndroidCheck Osaifu-Keitai—not only NFC

Google states that Suica e-money requires an Osaifu-Keitai-compatible Android device. Many models sold outside Japan do not include this support even when contactless payment and Google Wallet work.

Not compatible or still unsureUse a physical IC card or paper ticket

Do not make your first station gate the compatibility test. Keep Japanese yen and use a currently available physical visitor card, regular card or ordinary ticket.

Do not use nationality as the test

An overseas visitor may have a compatible phone, and a phone used in Japan may still fail because of its exact model, software, account, wallet or payment card. Check the device model and current official requirements.

Update and check the account
Install the latest supported iOS, turn on a device passcode and confirm two-factor authentication for the Apple Account.

Open Wallet and choose a transit card
Tap the add button, choose Transit Card and select a currently supported Japanese card such as Suica.

Add value and confirm
Follow Wallet’s payment steps. An eligible card in Wallet is required for the initial purchase or charge; the issuing bank can still decline a transaction.

Test before the busy gate
The first eligible transit card is normally set to Express Mode, allowing a tap without waking or unlocking the phone. Confirm the card and balance before travel.

Welcome Suica Mobile is another iPhone option

Designed for visitors

JR East provides an official iOS service for issuing and charging Welcome Suica Mobile on supported iPhone and Apple Watch devices.

Check where you are

Issuance or charging can be restricted in some countries or regions before arrival. If the official app instructs you to retry after entering Japan, do not treat that as proof the device is incompatible.

Temporary stored value

The official terms state that the balance is valid for 180 days from the initial charge, is not refundable and can be charged up to ¥20,000.

Use only where accepted

Tap on participating IC transport and at stores displaying the accepted IC payment mark. Separate tickets can still be required for some express and long-distance travel.

Check Osaifu-Keitai before opening Google Wallet

Find the exact model number
Use Settings or the manufacturer’s official specification page. A product family name alone may hide regional hardware differences.

Confirm Osaifu-Keitai compatibility
Do not stop at “NFC supported.” Japanese e-money in Google Wallet requires Osaifu-Keitai-compatible hardware and software.

Add Suica only if the option is offered
In Google Wallet, choose Add to Wallet and e-money, then follow the Suica instructions. If the option is missing or the official compatibility check fails, use the fallback below.

Future Android support is not current compatibility

JR East has announced planned Welcome Suica Mobile support for selected overseas Samsung Galaxy devices in the first half of 2027. That is a future plan, not permission to assume an overseas Android works in August 2026.

When setup fails

Fix the common problem—or switch quickly

Try after 5:00 a.m. JST

Apple says many Japanese transit-card functions are unavailable between midnight and 5:00 a.m. Japan time because of maintenance.

Check software and account status

Update the phone, confirm the passcode and account security, restart once and follow the official troubleshooting page.

Payment declined

A compatible phone can still fail at charging. Contact the card issuer or use another accepted payment method; keep cash for a physical card or paper ticket.

Physical card transfer is permanent

When an eligible physical transit card is transferred to Apple Wallet, the plastic card is disabled. Do not transfer a card another traveler still needs.

Fast fallback at the station

If you cannot add or charge the card, ask staff where the currently available physical IC card is sold. If none is available, buy a paper ticket. The optional booking card below is useful only when its airport, terminal, date, price and pickup instructions match your trip.
